New Robinson

By Jen

The Island

Use your hat on the crab. Go one screen to the left and use the crab on the vine. Go another screen to the left and take both the large rock and the small rock. Return to the first screen, with the palm tree, and use the small rock on the coconuts high in the palm tree. Take the coconut. Return to the cliff and use the coconut on it. Then use the large rock on the coconut. This will satisfy Robinson's thirst but now he's hungry. Retrieve your large rock before you leave.

Return to the palm tree screen, and this time go one screen to the right. Use the rope on the bananas. Use the branch on the dried-up tree to the left to get some logs. Pick up the end of the rope and quickly use it on the dried-up tree. Now you can take the bananas. Now Robinson wants a telephone! Like that's going to happen ...

Go one screen to the right. Click the parrot twice to find out it can read. Go two more screens to the right, until you are at the shipwreck. Use the rope on the right log, and then use the other end of the rope on the left log. Pick up the stick and use it on the raft. You will be on the ship.

Go up, right, up, left, and examine the shelf to get a box of matches. Go right, down, down, and take the fishnet. Go up, left, down to return to the starting room. Now go left, up, up, right, up, right, up, and take the bottle. Go down, down, and take the piece of paper. Go up, left, left, up, right, and take the handle (which turns out to be an ax). Go left, down, right, down, left, down, down, right, then down to exit the shipwreck.

Go one screen to the left, then one screen to the right. You have now circumnavigated the island, and Robinson tells you it would be a good idea to build a hut. Also, you get the map, which can be activated from now on by clicking on the grid at the bottom right of the screen.

Return to "A clearing with a parrot" and give the newspaper to the parrot. Click on the parrot again; it tells you, "It's easiest to build a house out of wood."

Go one screen to the right, or use the map, to return to the scene with the crocodile and the rubber tree and pine tree. Use the large rock on the crocodile to get rid of it. Use the ax on the pine tree. Use the rope on the log.

Return to the mountain scene and get another large rock. Return to the forest; the crocodile is back. Tie the end of the rope to the crocodile (click on "Rope tied to a log" then click on the crocodile). Then use your new big rock on the crocodile. Now you have to go find your log; it's one screen to the left, in the clearing with the parrot. If you click on the log, Robinson will say, "This is a great place for a house." Use the ax on the log. Now you get a separate puzzle screen in which you have to fit the pieces of the log into the shape of the house, from bottom to top. Here is what the finished product looks like:

Leave the house and talk to the parrot for another hint: "A fireplace with no stones is like a body without bones ... it rhymes." By this you can probably guess that your next task is to build a fireplace. Return to the mountain scene and pick up the pile of rocks. Go back home and put the rocks on the floor. Robinson says "Now I need something to hold the rocks together." Return to the shipwreck scene and take the clay (a red blob at the bottom of the screen). Go back home and use the clay on the rocks. Use the logs on the fireplace, then use the matches on the logs.

Talk to the parrot again; it says "This is an exhibition entitled 'Ceramics from ancient time to the present'... want to take a look?" From this you gather that you need to make a bowl. Return to the shipwreck and get another blob of clay. Return to the beach with the coconut tree and use the bottle on the puddle. Go home. Use the clay on the table, then use the water on the clay, then use the clay. Robinson will make a bowl. Quickly use the bowl on the fire to harden it. Now Robinson thinks it might be a good idea to fill the bowl with some lunch.

Return to the river scene, where the crocodile used to be (it's one screen to the right of Robinson's house). Use the fishnet on the river. Also use your bottle on the river to refill it. Go home and use the water then the fish on the pot. If you use the fish first, it will burn up and you'll have to go get another. Use your hat on the pot to carry the fish to the table, then try to eat the fish. Robinson says something to the effect of "yuck." You need to find something to make the fish more savory; it definitely won't be ketchup. Return to the puddle and fill your bottle with salt water. Go home and use the salt water on the pot. It will boil away, leaving behind a small pile of salt. Use your hat on the pot to carry the salt to the table. Use the table, and Robinson will salt and eat the fish, then a loud pounding noise will start.

Go outside and talk to the parrot, which says, "Good advice: Make sure you have some candles at home in case the electricity goes out." I don't think that has any bearing on the matter at hand, which is the loud noise ... or does it? Return to the totem pole scene to see some cannibals dancing around a person tied to a stake, the source of the noise. Robinson says, "That poor fellow needs help." Return to the puddle and fill your bottle with water. Go one screen right to the banana tree scene and take some more branches from the dry tree. Go two screens to the left, returning to the large oak tree. Use the logs (branches) on the ground under the tree hollow. Use the matches on the logs, then use the water on the fire to smoke the bees out of the hollow. Use the hollow to get the wax. Go one more scene to the left and pick up the small rock, if you don't already have it. Go home and use the wax on the table to make a candle. Return to the mountain scene and use the candle on the cave. Robinson will enter and come out on the cannibal scene behind some vines.

Use the small stone on the willow tree. Robinson says, "And where is our friend the skunk," and then a skunk comes in from the other side of the screen and stinks away the cannibals. Weird. Use the captive to release him. Now you get a new puzzle screen where you have to solve a cryptogram. Solve it by dragging the letters to the symbol you think they represent. Here is a picture of the solve:

You now have yourself a man Friday. You can now use either Robinson or Friday; choose between them by clicking on the head icons at the bottom left of your screen.

Return to the clearing where your house is and talk to the parrot. He says, "years ago today the Mongolphe brothers made their first flight. It turns out today's a holiday. We have to make a balloon!"

Return to the oak tree. As Friday, use the nest to get rid of the bird. Switch back to Robinson and click on the nest. Robinson pushes it off the tree and now it's a gondola. Robinson remarks that some ballast might be a good idea. Go one screen to the left and take a pile of rocks. Go back right and use them on the gondola. Click on the gondola again, and Robinson queries, "what are we going to make the shell out of?" How about some rubber? Return to the forest scene and use the ax on the rubber tree. Use the bottle on the tar. Use the bottle of tar on the stump left over from your big pine log. Robinson makes a balloon. Refill your bottle with tar and use it on the stump again. Robinson makes another balloon for Friday. Return to the gondola, at the oak tree. Use the logs on the ground, then light them with the matches. Switch to Friday and use the balloon on the fire. You automatically switch back to Robinson; quickly use the fishing net on Friday's balloon. If you wait too long, Friday lets go of the balloon and you have to go make him another one. The balloon is ready. Click on the balloon; Robinson says, "aren't you forgetting something?" You have to put out the fire. Go to the coconut tree scene and fill your bottle from the puddle. Return to the oak tree and use the bottle on the fire. Now click on the balloon to go flying.

Getting on and off the Island

This next part is a pain in the butt. You have to try to steer the balloon to the other island and get it as low in altitude as possible when you are right over the island. Use the Robinson and Friday arrows, which control both the altitude and compass direction, and watch the dots on the map at the bottom left and click like a maniac until you finally get the balloon to land on the island.

Friday greets his pink papa, who says that the jukebox must be repaired. The jukebox is that bunch of bamboo pipes to the right of the throne. In front of that are some pipes for the jukebox; have Robinson pick them up. Click on the servant with the large fan who is cooling the king to get a feather (a "fear"). Switch to Friday and click on the king. As the king talks, he lays down his pipe. As Robinson (automatic switch), quickly take the pipe before the king picks it up again.

As Robinson, click on the jukebox to enter a music puzzle screen, your favorite and mine! (If you got here too early, you can hit the Escape key to exit this screen.) You have an array of pipes and the feather and king's pipe across the top, and something looking like a flute across the bottom. Friday whistles a tune. You can cause him to repeat the tune at any time by clicking on him. Your job is to duplicate Friday's tune by arranging the pipes and feather in the correct order across the bottom of the screen. To see how you're doing, click on the small guy with the tube.

There are eight holes at the bottom of the screen. The song whistled by Friday has 14 notes. Each hole on the flute plays one or more notes, as follows:

Notes
-------

     13
 6  12              10
 3    4                9
 1    2    7    5    8  11        14
------------------------------

Holes
 1    2    3    4    5    6    7    8

For me the easiest strategy was to fill in holes 2 and 8 first, since notes 12/13 and 14 are all the same. The solution is as follows: Take the pipe from slot 1 and put it in hole 8; slot 2, hole 3; slot 3, hole 1; slot 4, hole 4; slot 5, hole 5; slot 6, hole 6; slot 7 (feather), hole 7; slot 8 (king's pipe), hole 2. Then Robinson and Friday will be captured by pirates.

The Pirate Ship

Use the curtain. Robinson will spread it out on the table. It looks like a checkerboard. Use the glasses on the shelf. Robinson spreads them out like the checker pieces. Use the bottle of wine to make the black pieces. Switch to Friday and use the bottles of wine again to make the red pieces. Now you get a checkers puzzle. If you can make a jump, you have to; you can't move defensively instead. Lose. Twice. Each time you lose, a pirate will go to sleep.

Go through the right door. Click on the captive to free him. He tells you to put together the map before he can take you home. Pick up the gag on the floor. It's a map piece. Go back out. You return to where the pirates are sleeping. Pick up the cigarette butt, another map piece. Go through the left door. Take the cork from the barrel and the paper on the shelf. Have Robinson try to get the paper on top of the stack of barrels; he can't reach it. Switch to Friday to get it. Still as Friday, go into the WC. He will come back with another map piece. Switch back to Robinson and send him into the WC. He too will come out with a map piece. As Friday, click on the rightmost barrel, which he will pick up, then as Robinson (automatic switch), pick up the paper scrap that was under the barrel.

Return to the captain's bridge and click on the incomplete map on the wall. Now you are faced with another jigsaw puzzle. Here is what the completed map will look like:
