Myst III: Exile

By Orb and Jen

To enter the Voltaic age, go to the tusk that has the prism and push the buttons in the order yellow, blue, green, red, yellow, purple, red, then go in and approach the pedestal. This is the tower with the leaf-like image; move the knobs to match this picture:

and push the button in the middle. The linking book will descend; open the book and touch the picture.

From where you land, turn around and go into the mountain. (If you go the opposite way, you will find the book that links back to J'nanin.) When you come to a tunnel leading to the right, go that way. A couple of steps in are some more pages of Saavedro's journal; pick them up and read them. Continue to the end of the corridor, then turn around and go down the blue corridor (you came in via the red). Continue until you come to a stopping place with a ladder on the left and some sort of diagram/map on the right. Go up the ladder, two steps, then turn and look downward to locate the red wheel. Turn it. Go back down and take one step deeper into the corridor, then turn to the left and examine the porthole. Don't do anything here yet, but remember this spot.

Continue all the way to the end of the blue corridor. You come to a door, and if you turn to the right, you see a ladder leading into a pipe. Go down that ladder. Push the red button, then move the lever to the left of the hydraulic lift.

Return to the porthole, click to get a closeup, then click on the water wheel to get it going. Now you can go back to the door at the end of the corridor and open it. A ladder is revealed; head on down. Turn to the left and push the button under the circular screen to get a cutscene. Turn around and head down to the end of the corridor until you come to a giant tank-like structure. Walk around the structure; on the ground at the back of it are some more journal pages. Return to your starting position. In the slot under the roman numeral 3-shaped figure is a hotspot; click to open the door and reveal a puzzle. The object here is to arrange the metal bars so that they all connect up vertically, both the sets of bars and the bars to the top and bottom of the arrangement. I found it easiest to move the top and bottom ones first since there is only one position for each of them that lines them up with the outside prongs. And then move the middle one so that it lines up with the top and bottom ones, with no bars sticking out to either side. (Note that you can solve this puzzle using any of the openings, but the one behind the roman numeral 3 has the least number of possibilities for the top and bottom and thus is probably the easiest.) When you do it right, the door closes automatically, and fast. We seem to have turned on some sort of power plant.

Return all the way back, out through the opening (if you stop in the blue tunnel and look at the diagram opposite the ladder, you will see four of the five circles are now lit), back through the blue corridor, back through the red corridor, and when you reach the end (beginning) of the red corridor, turn to the right. Continue all the way to the end of the path, then climb down the ladder to the right. Go to the end of that path, and you will see four red wheels and a tri-colored gauge of some sort. Turn around until you see a lever, then step out past the lever. Turn to the right and go up the barely visible ladder (three steps to the top). Turn and step onto the platform that looks like a sewer grate. Look down to find some more journal pages. Take a step toward the circular door and then touch it to open it. Go through, then cross the pipe across the crater. When you reach the other side, you will see a protrusion to the right with a red wheel on it. Turn the red wheel and go through the opening. Once you take a step into the tunnel, it becomes very dark. Take three steps in total, and then look down to see a grate. Click on it to open it, and then go in. Stand up straight and take a step toward the submarine-type door, turn the wheel to the right of the door to unlock it, then open it and go in. You just stepped out that locked door where the blue and red tunnels met in the last segment. When you take another step, that door will close, but now you can open it any time you choose.

Go back in. Step all the way toward the red wall o'mechanism, and look down to find a red knob. Pull the knob around counterclockwise (I had a bit of trouble with my mouse on these red knobs; I found that if you click on the knob and pull straight up or down, then let go of the mouse button, the knob would go all the way around when I released the mouse button); something will move in the red machinery. Go back to the door but not through, turn around completely, and look down at the middle of the floor. There is a ladder leading down into a hole; go that way. Stand up straight and look to the right of the ladder. Touch the dial to the left of the porthole to open the door. Go in and turn to the left; take a step; if you look down slightly, you will be facing another one of those red knobs. This time pull it clockwise once, then straight across the slot through the middle (to the left), then counterclockwise. The platform will have raised up twice. Take a step straight ahead, look down slightly, and touch the red switch. You hear something turn on; it's that big fan that you can't see right now. Go back to the red knob, pull it clockwise, straight across to the right, then counterclockwise, then left again. Leave, go back up the ladder, take a step toward the upstairs red knob, then pull that knob clockwise.

Go out the door behind you, down to the end of the red tunnel, and take a right. Continue all the way to the end of the path and look down to the right. Go that way. Continue until you find yourself at the puzzle with the three-colored gauge and the four red dials. Now you can hear the steam rushing through the pipes. Make sure all the valves are closed, i.e., no steam escaping from any of them (note that you can't move the one on the right), then turn around toward the left and pull the lever toward the valves. It turns out to be an elevator, and you will ascend.

Turn to the right and you will see four valves, this time all operational and all open. Close them all, then pull the lever toward the valves again to ascend to a third level. You can only move the elevator up if all valves on the current level are turned off. Okay, this is a math puzzle. With all of the 12 valves off, the needle rests on the line between the red and blue segments. You need to line it up with the dashed red line in the blue segment. There are 41 total steps. The top row of valves each move the needle in increments of 1, the middle row 4, and the bottom row 10. So open three valves on the top row, two valves on the middle row, and all three valves on the bottom row. You should still be on the top level; open any three of the valves; push the elevator lever away from the valves to descend a level; open any two valves on the middle level; push the elevator lever away from the valves to go all the way back down, and open all three valves that you can open. Step out of the elevator past the lever, then turn around and turn the big red valve that's just to the left of the outside of the elevator.

Go back into the elevator and out the entrance on the other side; go to the end of the path, up the ladder, eight steps, and then take the path to the left. You'll wind up in front of another elevator; get in and pull the lever to descend. Look down toward the back of the elevator to find some more journal pages, then take the path to the end. Look down and to the left and pull the lever. Get into the airship and pull the lever in the front of it (to the left as you get in).

Step out to the left and pull the lever at the end of the walkway. Wow!

Get back into the ship again and pull the lever again. Get out, and go open the door at the end of the path. Go in. Go down the hole in the middle and turn the valve at the end. You will see that strange spiral shape, and it will be mysteriously drawn on a sheet of paper, which joins your journals at the bottom of the screen. Directly above the valves you can find a hotspot on some double doors. Click there and a linking book back to J'nanin will appear. Open the book and touch the picture to return.

You will be back in Saavedro's tower on J'nanin. Place the page that you just got on the blue platform to trigger a cutscene.
