Myst III: Exile

By Orb and Jen

Narayan

After you have collected the three pages from Amateria, Edanna, and Voltaic, and placed each of them on the blue platform in Saavedro's tower, you have access to a new linking book. Use it to go to Narayan.

You are standing on and in front of some hoses/vines. Ahead are stairs, and to the right and behind you there are red banners with symbols on them similar to the ones on the three pages you have collected. Notice that the two banners that would have been closest to where you're standing have been torn off.

Go up the stairs and turn left. There is a round machine; click on it and nothing happens. Turn back right, go forward once to the locked gate, look through it at the docked wicker ship. Turn left and go forward two steps. Look at the other machine and click on it; again, nothing happens. Note the handle in between the two machines.

Turn around, go forward to the stairs, then go up the stairs. At the top, turn right and take a step forward. Here you are confronted by Saavedro. Watch the scene, then look right and down. There is a round machine with a red handle. Click to turn the red handle to the right.

Go back downstairs. Look over Atrus's book that he gave you at the beginning of the game. In it there are four phrases that are in bold:

energy powers future motion
nature encourages mutual dependence
dynamic forces spur change
balanced systems stimulate civilizations

Go back over to the red banners and copy down the symbols that match each word, keeping them in the same order as above. You will be missing the first three in the last sentence. Don't worry about that right now.

Balanced
Systems
Stimulate

Go back to the handle in between the two round machines and make sure it's turned to the left, toward the first round machine, then go to that machine. Click on it, and it will now raise. Click on it twice to open it.

What you see is three sets of designs, one on top, one on the left, and one on the right. You will be clicking on the lines in the designs to make them match the banner designs in the order you have noted them down, and you will do it clockwise starting from the top.

When you click on one of the design sections, it will light up in orange, when all are right, the whole thing will glow white.

(Note that you can do the three big circles and each circle's four smaller circles in any order.)

Click on the top circle for a close-up. Click on the lines that will make the top circle of these four match the symbol for "energy." The left circle should match the symbol for "motion," the right circle, "powers," and finally, the bottom circle should show the symbol for "future." You have entered Atrus's bold phrase clockwise.

Once all four symbols are correct and the whole thing is glowing white, do the next set on the right, as follows: top "nature," left "dependence," right "encourage," and bottom "mutual."

Finally, do the set on the left as follows: top "dynamic," left "change," right "force," and bottom "spur."

When all three sets are correct, you will turn to the right, and the doorway that was covered in a membrane-type substance is now open. Go to the door. Go outside through the door. Note the docked wicker ship—you can go look at it if you like, but there isn't anything that can be done with it at the moment. Instead, go down the stairway that is to the left. To the left is the linking book for Tomana. Click on it, and it will go into inventory.

Go forward into the room. Here you will find the three symbols you were missing, "balanced," "system," and "stimulate." Copy them down.

Go back upstairs into the starting room. Click on the switch in between the two machines so the handle is facing right. Then turn right and go to the second round machine. Click on it to raise it, and click on it twice more to open it. Click on the circle(s) to get a closeup, then enter the final set of four symbols, clockwise as before: top "balance," left "civilization," right "system," and finally bottom "stimulate."

The sky turns red, and you are turned around. Saavedro has arrived. Watch his reaction and listen to what he tells you to do. Save here.

Endgame

There are multiple possible ending sequences for Exile. Two are successful, with one being optimum, and there are other ways that will cause the player to lose.

Optimum: Go back upstairs and click the red handle again. This will activate a shield, trapping Saavedro. After watching him flip out about it, go back downstairs and to the gate. He will give you the Releeshahn linking book and beg to be released. Turn around and click on the handle behind you. Then go back upstairs and release him by clicking on the red handle again. A grateful Saavedro departs. Click on the Tomana linking book in inventory to return to Atrus and Catherine's patio, turn around and step toward the study door, and enjoy the endgame sequence.

Additional endings: Once Saavedro is trapped, get the book from him and return to Tomana. Watch a slightly different endgame sequence.

To lose, you can:

1. Return to Tomana before you get the book from Saavedro, then try to go back. Go outside while Saavedro is waiting by the ship and just stand there until he smacks you dead.

2. Go out there, leave, and come back one or more times until he smacks you dead.

3. Flip the switch like he tells you. He'll dump the book and leave you to go back to Atrus without it.

Thanks to reader TerJohn for this: Your walkthroughs of Myst III were excellent with one exception. There is another endgame option. After Saveedro tells you to switch the force fields, walk up to him and link out to Atrus' house. Saveedro follows a minute later and smacks you dead and the last thing you see before expiring is him leaping over you to attack Atrus and Catherine. I did this on purpose just to see what would happen. My guess was correct.
