Genesys

Walkthrough by Enigma

Genesys really is a rather simple game. You find objects and place them on a "riddle screen." The problem is, though, that you may not be able to find all the objects, and you may not know where to put them in this almost 100% linear game. So here it all is, step by teensy step.

General Instructions

The game begins with a beautifully produced movie introduction. After this or after the cutscenes you'll always find one or more screens on which you can pick up objects and listen to characters speak. Your computer pointer will change shape when you move it over hotspots. If the black mark on your pointer is on the left, you can pick up an object. If the black mark is on the right, you can click on a character to listen. Left-click to pick up, right-click or command-click to listen. Occasionally both sides of the pointer will be black, indicating that you can both listen to and pick up the character.

Listen to all of the characters for clues (except in the first two enigmas—see below), and paint the screen to find every object on each screen. Then click on the small black and white icon with a picture of gears at the top of your screen. That will take you to the "Enigma Screen." When you first open it, a document will pop up on the left side of the screen. On it you'll read a brief description of the riddle to be solved—I'll call this the "Enigma Document" in this walkthrough. In that document you'll see some words highlighted in red. These are buttons, taking you into the game's encyclopedia. Almost always, you'll find more objects to pick up on those pages, along with more clues to the enigma. When you return to the Enigma page, the document will be gone, but you can get it back again by clicking on the small black icon at the bottom left of the Enigma screen. Click on the black icon again to make the document disappear.

The objects you've collected will be in your inventory, a side-scrolling strip at the bottom left corner of your screen. Immediately to the right of it you'll see a question mark. Clicking on that will reveal even more about the riddle.

Next, go to work. On each Enigma screen, your main task will be to place the objects you've collected in your inventory onto the screen. Usually you have to do these in an exact order. Occasionally you'll need to manipulate something on the screen. A numbered gauge at the top of your screen will advance in red with each correct move you make. When you've finished the puzzle, click anywhere on the screen to see Jeanne Moreau tell you about the next advance in civilization.

At the right top of your screen you'll always see icons of the playing screens along with the Enigma icon and another icon just to the left of those. You can move between screens easily by clicking on their respective icons. The icon on the left takes you to a lovely screen that describes the religious beliefs of each major period. It's nice to see and has an excellent narration, but has nothing whatsoever to do with solving the Enigmas.

Also, look at the bottom right corner of your screen. There you'll see a "return" button, a "Quickmove" button, and an "Options" button. "Return" will take you to the last screen you saw. "Quickmove" gives you access to the entire encyclopedia, which organizes its pages according to time periods. Little icons on the side allow you to view the pages you've seen, those you haven't seen, or the whole encyclopedia. You can also search for a page. You don't have to visit all of the pages to win the game, but you can if you like. It's very well produced and has some good music.

The "Option" button lets you save, adjust the volume, or quit.

Now then. On to the game.

Enigma #1: Make a Stone Tool

On the first screen, pick up:

(I advise you not to listen to the characters on these early screens. They don't know language yet. They just sound like a child's imitation of an ape. It's pretty annoying.)

Go to Enigma document and click on "well sharpened." An encyclopedia page will appear. Pick up:

  • Striker

Go back to the Enigma screen.

On the Enigma screen, place:

  • The stone on the grass
  • The striker over the stone

Once the animation finishes, take the stone and place it on the stick.
